Revolt! Socialism, modernity, and political intrigue in the
Yiddish Cinema.
This film series of nine rare Yiddish films from the 1920s and
30s depicts the social and political upheaval faced by early 20th
century Yiddish speakers, including immigration, communism,
assimilation, Nazism, and utopianism. Thanks to Doc Films and the
National Center for Jewish Film, the University community can confront
these issues through "Ost und West" (East and West), "Nosn Becker Fort
Aheym" (The Return of Nathan Becker), "Motl der Operator" (Motl the
Operator), "Der Vanderner Yid" (The Wandering Jew), "Grine Felder"
(Green Fields), "Der Dibuk" (The Dybbuk), "Di Klyatshe" (A Light
Ahead), "Uncle Moses", and "Yankl der Shmid" (The Singing Blacksmith).
