Conference Report and Panel Discussion (May 5,
2008) [more]
Veronica Vegna (Italian), Meng Li (Chinese) and Lidwina van den Hout
(Spanish) attended a national conference sponsored by the Consortium
for Language Teaching and Learning at Brown University early this
month. The main topic discussed at the conference was Reassessing the
Foreign Language Curriculum in the Age of Globalization, which
responded to the recent MLA (Modern Language Association) report,
"Foreign Language and Higher Education". This report raised several
issues: among them are the need of transforming academic programs in
order to help students acquire translingual and transcultural
competence, and the importance of changing the two-tiered system in
Higher Education. Vegna, Li and van den Hout are very enthusiastic
about sharing the information discussed at the conference, and will run
a panel discussion at CSL for all of us.

Almarza, assistant coordinator and lecturer in Spanish language

her class so that students share their researched materials with each
other and use them in oral presentations. Based on her innovative way
of using the tool, Ms. Almarza will introduce different ways to
integrate Web 2.0 tools into foreign language class as a means of
bringing cultural components to the class and providing students with
an opportunity to learn collaboratively while further developing their
receptive and productive skills in the target language.
