Conference Report and Panel Discussion (May 5, 2008) [more]

Veronica Vegna (Italian), Meng Li (Chinese) and Lidwina van den Hout (Spanish) attended a national conference sponsored by the Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning at Brown University early this month. The main topic discussed at the conference was Reassessing the Foreign Language Curriculum in the Age of Globalization, which responded to the recent MLA (Modern Language Association) report, "Foreign Language and Higher Education". This report raised several issues: among them are the need of transforming academic programs in order to help students acquire translingual and transcultural competence, and the importance of changing the two-tiered system in Higher Education. Vegna, Li and van den Hout are very enthusiastic about sharing the information discussed at the conference, and will run a panel discussion at CSL for all of us.
