Current Projects

Ayala, Anamaria, Tanit Fernández de la Reguera, and Nené Lozada: Chicago Habla
    A project to generate a video and teaching guide that introduces
    students to the unique character of the main barrios of the city,
    focusing on neighborhoods and families.

Bashir, Elena and James Nye: Digital Dictionaries for Less Commonly Taught Languages of Pakistan
    A project to develop electronic versions of dictionaries for three of    
    Pakistan's rarely studied minor languages: Torwali, Khowar, and  
    Pashto.

Di Vito, Nadine: New project funded in Spring 2003.

Engbloom, Philip: Marathi Digital Texbook
    A project to create a digital version of the second-year Marathi
    textbook Marathi in Context.

Johnson, Janet: Casting a Wider Net: Distance Learning Project for Middle Egyptian
    A project to make Ancient Egyptian texts and learning aids available  
    on the world wide web. The project aims to produce an electronic    
    reading-book that contains a corpus of Middle Egyptian texts
    appropriate for beginning students.

Landahl, Karen and Norman McQuown: Chicago Maya
    A project to convert and re-edit teaching materials for Yucatec and    
    Quiché Maya from reel-to-reel tape and paper text to an interactive
    digital format.

Lee, Jung Hyuck: Chalk Project for 1st-year Korean
    A project to develop web-based learning materials for first-year
    Korean classes. Materials include listening comprehension exercises,  
    links to grammatical tips, vocabulary lists, and comprehension 
    quizzes.

Miyachi, Misa: Japanese Sounds On-line
    A project to create a web-based version of the second-year Japanese
    class text: Hiroyoshi Noto's Communicating in Japanese. Chapters
    will be available on CD-ROM and via the Chalk website.

Baumann, Catherine: Website for Process Writing Template for First-year German
    A project to develop a web-based template of ten topically organized
    written activities for students of first-year German.

Di Vito, Nadine and Claude Grangier: Preparing Authentic French Audio for Classroom Use
    A project to collect and transcribe French realia for inclusion in a
    website.

Di Vito, Nadine and Claude Grangier: Authentic French Audio for the Classroom
    A project that will prepare ten hours of interviews with native
    speakers of French for classroom use.

Egger, Rebekka: Russian Through Literary Readings: Workbook for the Intermediate Level
    A project to design curriculum utilizing the popular Russian novel
    The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov to teach intermediate
    Russian.

Hill, Sally and Davide Papotti: Web-based Resource for Italian Festivals
    A project that will provide online information about the regional
    festivals of Italy, including relevant internet links.

Inden, Ronald and Mitilesh Mishra: Teaching Hindi on Video Compact Discs
    A project to prepare and collect small video clips from Hindi language
    TV programs and films in order to expose students to the different
    forms of Hindi.

Kapstein, Matthew: Advanced Texts in Tibetan Philosophy and Religion
    A collection of Tibetan texts for advanced students of Classical
    Tibetan.

Lory, Harumi: Japanese on the Web
    A project to create a web-based version (with sound) of chapters 1-10
    of first-year Japanese class text: Hiroyoshi Noto's Communicating in
    Japanese . Chapters available on CD-ROM and via the chalk site.

Lozada, Nene and Katie Ullyot: Cara a Argentina
    A series of videoclips from Argentina featuring interviews with local
    people about the events depicted in the video.

Lozada, Nene and Katie Ullyot: Cara a Peru
    A series of videoclips from Peru featuring interviews with local   
    people about the events depicted in the video.

Lozada, Nene, Katie Ullyot and Deborah Skolnik: Cara a Cara
    A series of interviews with native speakers of Spanish from Spain,
    Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Peru, and other countries.

Lozada, Nene, Katie Ullyot and Deborah Skolnik: Cara a España
    A series of videoclips from Spain featuring interviews with local
    people about the events depicted in the video.

Pastina, Daniela and Rita Appodia: Italian Video Project: Coversazioni a Chicago
    A series of videoclips shot in various locations within the Italian
    community in Chicago. The series includes interviews with local
    people about locations highlighted in the video.

Sandberg, Mark, Barbara Need, Michael Ziolkowski and Karen Landahl: MacNorsk II
    A project to provide educational materials for Norwegian.

    A project to collect field matierials for Hidatsa (spoken in North
    Dakota) and, possibly, Plains Sign Language.

Completed Projects

Lowenstein, Joanna
    A project to collect and analyze speech production and perception
    data from adults with cochlear implants, an alternative to hearing
    aids for some deaf people.

Olson, Kenneth
    A project to analyze data from field research in order to provide a
    phonetic/phonological description of Mono, a language spoken in
    Congo.

Wysocki, Tamra
    A project to analyze Georgian consonant clusters.
