Use of the LFRC
The Language Faculty Resource Center (LFRC) offers a wide
variety of services to language faculty and instructors. It addresses
practical concerns of language instruction, such as classroom space and
audio/visual equipment, and pedagogical concerns such as courseware
development. LFRC staff members advise faculty on multimedia courseware
projects, and LLA matching funds provide financial support for research
projects. The LFRC aims to facilitate and improve language instruction
at the University of Chicago.
1. Equipment Reservations
Instructors can check out the following equipment at the LFRC: video
monitors, VCRs, DVD players, audiocassette players, CD players,
overhead projectors and LCD projectors. Instructors should make
reservations at least 24 hours in advance
using the electronic reservation system at the LFRC each time they wish
to borrow equipment or request SCOLA programs to be taped (when
requesting SCOLA taping, they also should notify the LFRC staff). Those
wishing to use Cobb 209 or Cobb 210 should consult the C 209/210
on-line reservation schedule in addition to entering their request in
the reservation system. The LFRC staff will determine whether there are
possible schedule conflicts and will notify the instructor if there are
any
problems. Patrons may make blanket reservations for a single quarter
but may be asked to accommodate occasional use by others if resources
are scarce.
2. Photocopier Use
The LFRC provides a photocopier for faculty and instructors. Prior to
making a photocopy, please obtain a photocopy code from the LFRC staff.
Note that each department has set limits on the number of photocopies
each instructor can make per quarter. Please check with your
departmental language coordinator for information about specific copy
limits.
3. Computer Use
Both Macintosh computers and PCs are available for faculty and
instructor use. There are to be no changes to the hardware or software
configuration of any computer
without approval of the site managers. If software is needed that the
LLA does not currently possess, please submit a request so that this
can be purchased when funds are available.
4. Video Library
The LFRC's video library contains holdings in the following languages:
Arabic, Czech, French, German, Italian, Macedonian, Persian, Polish,
Portugese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian and Spanish. Instructors should
check out videos using the electronic reservation system. Videos are
available on a first-come-first-serve basis and may be held for an
entire quarter unless recalled.
