Equipment Lend-out
The LLA lends audio/video and other forms of presentation
equipment to instructors and students for classroom use, field research
and class projects.
Instructors wishing to use the LFRC's equipment should reserve
it via the electronic reservation system in Cobb 211. Reservations
should be placed at least one day in advance of use. Reservation is
also suggested at the SS4 site to ensure availability of the equipment.
All
equipment which is taken from the Labs is subject to recall or
rescheduling in case of conflicting priorities. We do our best to
ensure that the equipment is in working order before it goes out, but
we bear no responsibility for loss of data.
Language instructors and researchers have first priority for
the use of equipment; requests by other faculty and staff in the
Division of the Humanities are then considered; faculty outside our
usual consituency should contact Multimedia Services in
NSIT first and
then contact the LLA for assistance.
Research
Those interested in borrowing or using equipment for research should
abide by the following guidelines:
- You need to submit a letter of request that includes a
working title and a paragraph describing your work, even if these are
preliminary (e.g., a proposal). The form is
available at SS 4.
- Projects must follow The University of Chicago's Institutional Review Board
guidelines for Human Subjects' Rights if
applicable. Submit the IRB approval with your letter of request.
- Once the project is approved, researchers will be asked to
sign an Acknowledgment Form provided by the LLA. This form requests
that all research conducted using the facilities and equipment of the
LLA acknowledge the support of the LLA if and when such research is
published.
Audio/Video
Production
Instructors who wish to incorporate student video or audio productions
into classwork should submit a request to the LLA staff stating the
course number, the number of students expected to use the equipment,
the type of equipment to be used and the length of time the project is
expected to last. This equipment includes both analog and digital
cameras, audiocassette field recorders, tripods, microphones and
digital video-editing equipment. Once the request is approved, the
instructor then coordinates group training sessions with the staff.
Each student subsequently comes in to sign out whatever equipment s/he
needs. Students are expected to return the equipment on time and not to
exceed the time they signed up for, whether for taping or for editing.
