Use of the Language Labs

The Language Labs (SS 4) offer a variety of services to students, faculty, staff, spouses, alumni and International House residents.  It not only provides audio/visual equipment to patrons but also supports linguistic research by maintaining a recording studio, editing equipment and various workstations.  The Labs aim to facilitate language learning on a campus-wide level by keeping its services both accessible and up-to-date.

1. Sign in/out
The SS4 site requires patrons to sign in and out each time they use the facilities. This involves filling out a request slip and presenting a U. of C. ID to be scanned and a second form of ID to be held as collateral. The second form of ID may include a current driver's license, international student ID, passport, shuttle-bus pass or library card. We are not permitted to accept money-bearing forms of ID such as a Chicago Card, bank card or credit card. Upon exiting the lab the patron must again present his/her U. of C. ID along with any materials borrowed. The patron's U. of C. ID and collateral ID will then be returned with the request slip. Patrons should write down the current time and place the slip in the box at the service window.

2. Media Use
Only audio and videotapes lent out or sold at either LLA site may be used on the Labs' equipment. There are strict restrictions on taking media borrowed from the Labs out of the premises; consult a staff member before taking out any item.

3. Audiocassette Copy Order
Where copyright regulations permit, patrons may order personal copies of audiocassette materials at the SS4 site.

  • Only cassettes purchased at the Labs may be used for personal copies. The price is $1.50 per cassette, payable at the time of order placement. The only exception involves requests for copies of Social Science lectures. These require 90-minute cassettes, which the Labs do not sell. Patrons must supply their own stock, which must be of good quality and in the "normal bias" standard.
  • Orders are usually completed in 24 hours. There is no service charge for copying up to two cassettes per order. Larger orders may take longer to fulfill and will incur a surcharge of 50¢ per side.
  • Patrons may recycle recorded cassettes when ordering further copies, provided that the cassettes meet quality standards.  Some course material may require that tapes be recycled; consult staff for details.
  • Because of the limited storage space, we will recycle any cassette not picked up within 30 days.
