The Language Laboratories and Archives (LLA) consist of two sites--the original one in the Social Science Research Building (opened 1962) and the Language Faculty Resource Center (LFRC) in Cobb Hall (opened 1985). The Social Science Site (SS 4) constitutes the sole facility on the university campus that allows patrons--whether students, faculty or staff--to practice with foreign language materials. In the large Media Room patrons have access to audiocassette decks, videotape players, DVD players, computers with multimedia capability, and digital video-editing equipment. The site also lends out equipment for field work and student projects, including both analog and digital audio tape recorders and video cameras. Additional facilities provide 1) equipment and workspaces to conduct linguistic research, 2) a recording studio for faculty and others to record original materials, and 3) a library that holds archival recordings in more than 180 languages and dialects. On the other hand, the LFRC (C211) caters especially to instructors of foreign languages. The Center lends out audio-visual equipment, such as cassette, video, and DVD players, and also provides audio/video recording equipment for various projects. To assist instructors in developing audio, video and computerized materials, the LFRC offers workspaces and technical advice along with pointers on how to obtain grant funding. In addition, the Center's facilities include 1) a SCOLA viewing room (C209), which doubles as a video production studio and small classroom when not being used by patrons to watch foreign news broadcasts, and 2) the Interactive Multimedia Resource Center (IMROC, C210), which is a classroom equipped with computers controlled by a central management system and projectors for displaying video and computer images. The LFRC also has a Polycom video conferencing system for use in this space.
