For policies on borrowing videos from our center, see the
Media page.
The CSL has two photocopiers
that can be used to reproduce teaching materials for language classes.
Copy codes are required, and can be provided by the CSL staff. If you
forget your copy code, please see the CSL front desk and they will be
able to look it up for you. Each department or language program allows
teachers to make copies up to a limit, so teachers should check with
their language coordinator about allowable limits on copies.
By agreement between the language departments, the College and the CSL, each department is allocated a certain number of copies for which the College will pay 2/3 of the cost. (During Summer Session, the Graham School pays the College’s share of 2/3 of each copy.) This number is based on language class enrollment figures. Departments that exceed this number will pay the full cost of additional copies. All photocopying should be restricted to class materials only. For large amounts of copying, please use the Humanities copy center in Walker.
The CSL offers both black and white to faculty, instructors and
teaching assistants from any CSL computer. Currently, departments and
language programs are not charged for black and white printing,
however, color printing is 35¢ per page.
In order for us to keep providing printing and duplication services, we ask that you print only teaching materials and do not print dissertations, research papers, or personal materials. To keep your department’s costs down, try to print only one copy of a document; because photocopies are less expensive than print copies, use a copier with your copy code to make multiple copies of a document.
Equipment should be reserved in advance. If students will be using
equipment--for example video cameras or headphones for class
projects--teachers should consult with Rod Edwards, or other staff at the
CSL. Please see listing of available equipment at About the
Center>Services. Some equipment can be checked out overnight, but
first check with a staff member before reserving equipment for
overnight or weekend use.
Equipment available for checkout include: laptop computers, CD and tape players, LCD projectors, TV monitors with DVD and VHS players, audio and video recording equipment, and much more. If there are any questions about CSL equipment holdings please contact a CSL staff member. N.B. Borrowers are responsible for the condition of the equipment they borrow. It is expected that equipment will be returned to the CSL in the same condition it was in when borrowed. The cost of replacing lost or damaged equipment is the responsibility of the borrower.
The CSL provides
instructors with computers, audiovisual recording equipment, a
photocopier, and other equipment to help them prepare course materials.
Portable equipment is also available for check out, including video
monitors, video players, audio cassette/CD players, LCD projectors,
laptop computers, video recording equipment, headsets, etc. Instructors
can reserve equipment in advance (see Equipment Rental and Use). The CSL offers instructors
with onsite training for the use of the equipment and computer software
and can help troubleshoot problems, but making an appointment to talk
to a member of the staff is highly recommended if special attention is
required. Also, the CSL’s video collection can be used by both
instructors and students; the collections are searchable (Home > Media).
Members of the CSL
staff can assist with project development, from planning to finished
product. The CSL can provide help with writing proposals for funding
and preparing protocols for human subject rights compliance, as well as
give suggestions about copyright and intellectual property issues. The
CSL can also provide technical assistance and training from the start
to the completion of a project. Instructors are encouraged to visit the special request page where information, such as human subject rights and copyright, can
be found. It is also through this page that you can request project
assistance from the CSL.
As a member of the
Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning the University of Chicago
receives annual funding, to be distributed to projects that are
approved for funding, in quarterly competitions, by the local
Consortium committee [current Consortium committee
members: Steven Clancy (Chairman), Nadine di Vito, Catherine Baumann,
Elena Bashir, Youquin Wang, Kay Heikkinen, Michael Berger]. The grant
proposal guidelines are downloadable here as a PDF or MS Word format
document.
The CSL also has limited funding available for special projects, meetings, lectures, and other events and activities. Please ask the staff for further details.

Overview
The Polycom video conferencing system, allows faculty and classes to participate in events with other universities and institutions (see Specifications below). The system is quite flexible, easy to use, and can be used in a variety of venues. Though it is optimally used within the CSL, the system can be used almost anywhere there is a Ethernet jack. Use also requires a specific IP address, so use of the system outside of Cobb Hall and neighboring buildings will require the user to obtain an IP address from NSIT for the specific location in which the unit will be used. If you are interested in holding a video conference on- or off-campus, please contact the CSL. Specifications All faculty in the Division of the Humanities are eligible to use the video conferencing system. Reservation of the video conferencing system requires two weeks' advance notice. Use of the system recommends training and an initial test of the conference link in order to troubleshoot any problems that may arise. Both the training/pre-consultation and the rental fee are $30 per hour. If the Polycom system is to be used outside of the CSL, the users will be required to submit a signed blank Interdepartmental Order Form (Form 62). This form will be used to cover the equipment in case of damage or loss. If the Polycom unit is returned to the LLA in good condition, the form will be returned to the user.
The CSL has facilities
for hosting conferences, workshops, and training sessions. Please
contact Steven Clancy or Michael Berger for more information.
